🐦 The Black Cormorant – Israel’s Elegant Diver 🐦

Meet the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)

This bird is a familiar sight across Israel’s wetlands, rivers & coasts, with its sleek black feathers, sharp beak & turquoise eyes,
Unlike many birds, cormorants dive deep beneath the surface, chasing fish with remarkable speed & precision. After a successful hunt, you’ll often see them perched on rocks or branches with their wings outstretched, drying off in the sun — a classic cormorant pose!

In Israel, these birds gather in large numbers during the winter months, migrating from colder regions of Europe and Asia. They can be spotted around the Hula Valley, Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) & along the Mediterranean coast.

While they play an important role in local ecosystems, their growing populations have sometimes caused tension with fish farmers. Watching a flock of cormorants swoop and dive is one of the most spectacular wildlife sights in the country.
