Male Polyphaga aegyptiaca - Egyptian desert cockroach
This is a nocturnal, burrowing insect with distinct sexual dimorphism: females are round, blackish-brown, & wingless, while males have long black wings & a yellowish edge on their pronotum. Its habitat includes desert & semi-desert regions of the Mediterranean, southern Europe & southwestern Asia, where it shelters in soil, rock crevices, or under shrubs during the day.
They thrive on plant & animal debris, often found in rock shelters or sandy areas.
Females: Are round, blackish-brown, & wingless, resembling large beetles.
Males: Have a more elongated body & possess long, black wings.
They have adapted to desert & semi-desert conditions with dry climates and sandy, loamy soils.
They hide in burrows in the soil, cracks, or cavities under rocks & shrubs during the day.
Females are prolific layers of oothecae (egg cases).
