🌸 Meet one of Israel’s curious wildflowers - the Scorpion’s Tail (Heliotropium) 🌿 from the borage family (Boraginaceae)
Its Hebrew name comes from the way the flower stalk curls as it grows, just like the tail of a scorpion 🦂. Delicate white, yellowish-white, or pale blue blossoms line the spiral, making it a striking little plant once you notice it. Leaves & stems are often covered with tiny bristles.
The genus is Heliotropium. In Israel there are several species, such as Heliotropium israeliticum (Israeli Heliotrope) & Heliotropium hirsutissimum (Hairy Heliotrope).
Like many members of the borage family, some species contain toxic alkaloids (pyrrolizidines), which can damage the liver. They’re not edible!
You’ll spot the Scorpion’s Tail across Israel, in fields, along country paths, and even in the semi-desert. It’s a wonderful reminder that nature here is full of surprises, not just the famous or historical sites.
