The Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

Did you know the oldest apiary in the world was discovered a little over an hour from Zichron Ya’akov?
Our upcoming ‘Milk & Honey’ tour will take you to see the clay hives thought to have a production capacity of 500kg of honey per year during the reign of kings David & Solomon.

We'll also be visiting a current honey (& silk) farm, at the foothil of Mount Tabor, & exploring the history of the development of food technology in Israel. Taking you back 8,000 years in time to a community who made & decorated the first ceramic pottery in Israel for storing dairy products; we'll visit a dairy farm & a farm which harnesses some of the the most ground breaking farming principles.

Did you know one honey bee colony can pollinate up to 300 million flowers every single day? That’s not just amazing - it’s essential.

🏡 Habitat
Honey bees nest in tree cavities, hollow logs, or man-made hives. They need diverse floral landscapes within 2–3 miles; urban gardens, meadows, orchards.

🐝 Breeding
A single queen lays up to 2,000 eggs per day. Drones (males) mate with new queens in mid-air. Worker bees (all female) raise the brood, control hive temperature & keep the colony alive.

🌸 Food
Nectar (for energy) & pollen (for protein). Worker bees visit 50–100 flowers per trip, turning nectar into honey back at the hive. A single colony needs 50-100 lbs of honey just to survive winter.
From almonds to apples, honey bees help produce 1/3 of the food we eat. Yet populations are declining due to pesticides, habitat loss & climate change.

🌻 Here’s how you can help:

Plant bee-friendly flowers (lavender, sunflowers, wildflowers)

Skip pesticides in your garden

Leave a small dish of water out for thirsty bees

Small actions = big impact. Let’s keep the buzz alive. 🍯✨
