Without this building, Israel's history might have been written very differently.....

Beit Kadima sits on the seam between Kiryat Shmuel & Rechavia. In 1945, the British built it as luxury housing for senior officers - a statement of imperial permanence.

But the officers never moved in.

The United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) was created on 15 May 1947 in response to a United Kingdom government request that the General Assembly "make recommendations under article 10 of the Charter, concerning the future government of Palestine."

By August 1947, the 11 members of UNSCOP had moved in. There they formulated the recommendations that became the Partition Plan....leading directly to the historic United Nations resolution of November 29, 1947, & the establishment of the Jewish state.

Designed by architect Otto Hoffman, the building blends Bauhaus modernism with classic Jerusalem designs: stone cladding, twin arched staircases & meticulous craftsmanship. It even had covered parking, & a laundry room!

During the War of Independence, it became a Haganah frontline post. Fighters carved passages between apartments to move under fire, protecting families who had been evacuated from Katamon.

Today, Beit Kadima is a private apartment building, with some of the original families who moved there in 1947 still living in the compound today.

In Jerusalem, every stone tells a story.
