June 15 is National Beer Day in the UK so I’m going to explore Israeli breweries.

But first it seems we pronounce the names of some beers all wrong! So here's a guide to help bit.ly/3CrcwkO

The history of beer brewing in #israel dates back thousands of years; the Hebrew Bible mentions beer & archaeological evidence reveals the presence of ancient breweries .

However with the advent of winemaking, beer brewing became less prominent.
In 1935 James Armand de Rothschild saw a demand for beer among those living in British mandate Palestine & founded the Palestine Brewery in Rishon LeZion

In 1940 the AACI (Association of Americans Australians & Canadians in Israel) commissioned the brewery to supply beer to Australian troops & by 1942 the brewery enlarged its plant to meet increased demand! Today there are over 120 different Israeli beers!

You may be familiar with Israeli-brewed beers eg Goldstar, Maccabee, Nesher, Carlsberg, Tuborg & Guinness

But how about these:
·    2006 The Dancing Camel opened in Tel Aviv in 2006…..but was it really the 1st modern brewery?
Read on.....
·    Katzrin Golan brewery (combine a visit with a tour of the Golan distillery & the Golan winery)
·    Next up Jem’s beer factory, owned by Jeremy Weldfeld, former chef to The White House! A good friend – hi Andreas -helped build it; now there are 13 branches all over Israel
 In no particular order:
·    Pardes Hana: Shevet Brewstillery
·    Even Yehuda: HaDubim beers from ‘the People’s Brewery’
·    Malka in the Tefen Industrial Park is the biggest craft brewery in Israel producing 70,000 litres/month
·    Beit Shemesh: Shapiro
·    Jerusalem: Hatch
·    Yonah Rubin & Jacob Mogerman ('the Nomads') contract-brew at several locations including Hatch
·    Karmiel: Gluten-free certified kosher-for-Passover beer brewed without malted grain. A major share of the brewery was sold to an entrepreneur who has begun brewing regular beers under the name Hagibor ('The Hero')
·    Be'ersheva: Chalutz Chadash ('New Pioneer')
·    Birateinu, the Jerusalem Beer Centre
·    Alexander
·    Beit Shemesh: Oak & Ash
·    Kiryat Gat: Beer Bazaar
·    Ashkelon: Shikma a wholly owned subsidiary of the giant Israel Beer Breweries Ltd
·    Galilee: Shanty Bounty from the Herzl Brewery
·    And now ‘the wild card’. In Taybeh the only all-Christian town between biblical Samaria & Judea, where Jesus ‘raised Lazarus to life’, a brewery was opened in 1994 10 years BEFORE The Dancing Camel! A family business running on renewable energy is managed by Madees Khoury - the only female beer brewer in the Middle East. The beer is certified as kosher by a rabbi from Ofra.

·    Finally Beer Market at Jaffa Port offers over 80 beers from around 25 microbreweries including Herzl IPA VeZe… , HaDag HaLavan 40° BaTzel Summer Ale, Laughing Buddha, Perah HaBar, HaDictator, Olde Papa, Babylonian Olde Ale 49.
