Welcome to The Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus
This aerial photograph captures the Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus in its early decades, dominated by the iconic Einstein Tower. Founded in 1925, the university became a beacon of Jewish learning, scientific advancement, & cultural revival.
After the War of Independence in 1948, Mount Scopus was left as an Israeli enclave entirely surrounded by Jordanian-controlled territory.
Access was only possible via tightly controlled UN convoys.
For 19 years, students & staff made the difficult journey through hostile surroundings, maintaining academic life against all odds.
In June 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli forces liberated Jerusalem’s eastern sector, ending the university’s isolation. Mount Scopus once again became fully accessible, resuming its role at the heart of Israel’s intellectual & cultural life.
Today, walking these grounds is not just a campus visit, it is a journey through history, resilience & the unwavering spirit of the Jewish people.
And as an aside - my son is about to complete his degree there; a triple major in law, philosophy & economics! (Proud Dad!)
