The Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) has striking yellow wings edged in black & a delicate “swallowtail” at the back. This butterfly thrives in fields, gardens, & hilly, open landscapes.
It is active from March to November, & can complete up to 5 generations per year

During the summer, thousands of swallowtails migrate through the Hula Valley, offering a breathtaking natural spectacle

Widespread Presence: Thanks to Israel’s unique geography, bridging continents & climates, the country supports 110–133 butterfly species, with swallowtails being among the most admired.

Swallowtails are not just photogenic, they're ecological indicators. Their presence reflects healthy ecosystems rich with diverse flowering plants. Their decline signals broader environmental stress, from habitat fragmentation to climate shifts.
