Discover the Damascus Saffron (Crocus cancellatus subsp. damascenus)
The Damascus Saffron (Crocus cancellatus subsp. damascenus)
It thrives on rocky limestone hillsides, open scrubland & light woodland clearings, its lilac petals & golden filaments appearing for just a few short days each year, after the first autumn rains (October–December).
The northern populations often flower earlier & in cooler conditions, while the southern ones push through arid terrain, showing remarkable adaptability.
Sadly it faces threats from overgrazing, habitat loss & shifting rainfall patterns.
