Meet the Marbled Polecat (Vormela peregusna)
From the northern Galilee & Carmel to the Judean Desert & Negev, in open grasslands, rocky slopes & dry scrub. It often shelters in burrows made by other animals, emerging at dusk to hunt.
Despite its cute looks, it’s a fierce & agile hunter, feeding on rodents, lizards, insects & birds’ eggs. Its sharp teeth & lightning reflexes make it a valuable ally for farmers, keeping pest populations in check.
Its main natural enemies are birds of prey such as eagles & owls, though few dare challenge its powerful scent glands, which release a pungent odour when it’s threatened!
Sadly, today its greatest dangers are habitat loss, road accidents & poisoning from pest control chemicals.
