🦊✨Simon says: "Meet the Golden Jackal – Israel’s Clever Survivor" ✨🦊
🦊✨ The Golden Jackal Canis aureus.✨🦊
Found from the Galilee woodlands to the Negev scrub, the golden jackal is from the Canidae family, the same as wolves, foxes & dogs)
It’s the most widespread wild canid in Israel, thriving in habitats from the coastal plains to the Galilee & Judean foothills, & is one of Israel’s most adaptable wild mammals. Agile, intelligent & surprisingly social, it thrives everywhere from farmland edges to urban parks.
🌍 Living in open fields, coastal plains, pine forests & dry riverbeds, the jackal avoids true desert, but it’s common across much of northern & central Israel - often heard calling at dusk.
🥩 Omnivorous & opportunistic, it feasts on fruit, insects, small mammals, birds, carrion & even leftovers from picnics! This flexible diet has helped them flourish despite human expansion.
🐺 Jackals live in monogamous pairs & family groups. Pups are born in spring, emerging from dens in May or June.
🦅 Wolves once kept jackal numbers down, but with wolves now rare in most of Israel, jackals play an important ecological role, cleaning up carrion & controlling rodent populations.
📍 Most commonly found in: Hula Valley, Carmel, Jezreel Valley, Judean foothills, coastal parks
