White-crowned Wheatear | סוף שחור-לבן
🐦 With its jet black plumage, white crown & upright stance, the White-crowned Wheatear is one of the easiest desert birds to spot
🌍 They are found mainly across southern Israel in rocky wadis, cliffs, remote ruins & dry open landscapes, especially around Mitzpe Ramon, Ein Avdat, Timna Park & the wider Negev.
Their diet consists of insects, spiders, small lizards, berries & seeds.
🦅 Predators include raptors such as kestrels & sparrowhawks, desert foxes & snakes
🐣 The breeding season is March to July; they nest in rock crevices, caves, stone walls, or abandoned buildings. Females lay 3 - 5 eggs & both parents are active in defending their territory
🎶 Known for their loud, varied song & constant tail movements, males perform short fluttering display flights during spring. They’re very curious & often approach hikers for a closer look.
