Simon says: "Let's learn more about the Cyclamen!"🌸

The Cyclamen ðŸŒ¸ (Cyclamen persicum)

Cyclamen is a genus of 25 species of perennial flowering plants in the family Primulaceae. In English, it is known by the common names sowbread or swinebread & in Hebrew,  ×¨×§×¤×ª

Cyclamen are native to the eastern Mediterranean & can be spotted in woodland, on rocky hillsides & in shaded wadis. They are a familiar sight in the Carmel, Galilee, Judean hills & on Israel's coastal plain.

This hardy plant blooms in late autumn & winter, the delicate pink, white or magenta flowers appearing after the first rains. It survives Israel’s long, dry summers thanks to a subterranean tuber which disappears entirely during the hottest months, conserving energy until the rains return.

Cyclamen are pollinated mainly by insects, especially bees, which are drawn by their subtle scent.

After flowering, the stem curls downward, placing the seed capsule close to the soil - a clever adaptation that protects seeds & encourages successful germination.

The cyclamen has become a symbol of the Israeli winter; picking wild cyclamen is illegal, helping protect this much-loved native flower for future generations.
